How To Add Chart Title In Excel

In this article, I will tell you how to add, change, and remove chart titles in Excel, I will also tell you how to add, change, and remove chart axis titles in excel as well.

1. How To Add, Change, and Remove Chart Title In Excel.

1.1 How To Add Chart Title In Excel.

1. First, you should add a chart in excel, you can read the article How To Insert Line Graph In Excel to learn more.
2. Click the chart, then you can see the dynamic Chart Tools tab on the Excel top area.
3. Click the Chart Design sub-tab under the Chart Tools tab.
4. Then in the Chart Layouts group, click the Add Chart Element —> Chart Title menu item.
5. Then it will show a sub-item list, which contains 4 sub-items ( None, Above Chart, Centered Overlay,  and More Title Options…).
6. When you select the None item, the excel chart title will be hidden.
7. When you select the Above Chart item, it will locate the chart title at the top center area above the chart.
8. When you select the Centered Overlay item, it will put the chart title over the chart image, and locate it at the center of the chart image horizontally.
9. Then you can click the chart title in the chart to edit the chart title text.
10. When you select the More Title Options… item, it will open the Format Chart Title pane on Excel’s right side.
11. There are 2 items in the Format Chart Title pane, they are Title Options and Text Options.
12. The default selected item is the Title Options, there are 3 tab buttons under it, they are Fill & Line, Effects, and Size & Properties.
13. Click the Fill & Line button, you can configure the chart title area filled color style and border style.
14. Click the Effects button, you can add effects such as Shadow, Glow, Soft Edges, and 3-D Format effect to the excel chart title.
15. Click the Size & Properties button, and you can change the chart title’s size and alignment properties.
16. When you click the Text Options item, it will also show 3 tab buttons under it, they are Text Fill & Outline, Text Effects, and TextBox.
17. Click the Text Fill & Outline button, it will show 2 options under it Text Fill and Text Outline, you can configure the chart title text color and outline color properties through these options.
18. Click the Text Effects button, it will show 6 text effects groups under it, you can change the chart title text effect through those groups options.
19. Click the TextBox button, you can configure the chart title text box options such as text direction, custom textbox angle, etc.

1.2 How To Change Chart Title In Excel.

1. If you just want to edit the chart title text in excel, you can click the chart title in excel, and then edit the text directly.
2. If you want to edit the chart title effects or chart title textbox properties, you can follow the below steps.
3. Click to select the chart in excel, then click the Chart Tools —> Chart Design tab on the excel top area.
4. Click the Add Chart Element  —> Chart Title —> More Title Options… in the Chart Layouts group.
5. Then you can change the chart title-related properties in the Format Chart Title pane on the excel right side.

1.3 How To Remove Chart Title In Excel.

1. You can right-click the chart title in excel, then click the Delete item in the popup menu list.
2. You can also select the chart in excel, then click the Chart Tools —> Chart Design —> Add Chart Element ( in Chart Layouts group ) —> Chart Title —> None item to remove the chart title in excel.

1.4 How To Open The Excel Format Chart Title Pane Quickly.

1. Right-click the chart title in excel, then click the Format Chart Title… menu item in the popup menu list.
2. Then you can see the Format Chart Title pane on the excel worksheet’s right side, you can configure the chart title properties in that pane.

2. How To Add, Change, and Remove Chart Axis Title In Excel.

2.1 How To Add Chart Axis Title In Excel.

1. Select the chart in excel, then click the Chart Tools —> Chart Design tab on the excel top area.
2. Then click the Add Chart Element —> Axis Titles menu item in the Chart Layouts group.
3. It will display 3 sub-items, they are Primary Horizontal, Primary Vertical, and More Axis Title Options…
4. You can select the Primary Horizontal item to add the axis title horizontally.
5. You can select the Primary Vertical item to add the axis title vertically.
6. Then you can click the axis title textbox and set the title text.
7. If you want to customize the axis title text, you can click the More Axis Title Options… item.
8. Then you can see the Format Axis Title pane on the worksheet’s right side, it is similar to the Format Chart Title pane.

2.2 How To Change Chart Axis Title In Excel.

1. To change the chart axis title text only in excel, you can click the chart axis title and then change the text as you need.
2. If you want to change more of the chart axis title such as text color, size, effect, etc. You can change them in the Format Axis Title pane, please refer to steps 7 and 8 in section 2.1.

2.3 How To Remove Chart Axis Title In Excel.

1. Right-click the chart axis title in excel, then click the Delete menu item in the popup menu list.

2.4 How To Open The Excel Format Axis Title Pane Quickly.

1. First, right-click the chart axis title in excel, then click the Format Axis Title… menu item in the popup menu list.
2. Then you can see the Format Axis Title pane on the excel worksheet’s right side, you can configure the chart axis title properties in that pane.
